Here at EquiRatings we track trends across all phases at every international level, and we love when standout performers rise to the top as true statistical stars of the sport. These are the horses we enjoy highlighting the most, and today we’re delighted to spotlight a horse that has long been an EquiRatings favorite.
When analyzing eventing’s top dressage performers, one need look no further than Louis M, who has cemented his place in our database as a first phase freak over the past three seasons. He has delivered dazzling dressage performances both with Germany’s Pia Münker, who produced him through the three-star level, and most recently with his new owner, young rider Cornelia Dorr of the United States.
The Rheinlander gelding started a hot streak of sub-40 dressage scores with Pia at Luhmühlen CIC2* in 2014 when he scored 34.9. Louis M then continued those sub-40 dressage performances for more than two calendar years, scoring 39.4 in the Plantation Field CIC* in September in his first international appearance with Cornelia.
That marked 20 consecutive international appearances in which Louis M delivered a sub-40 dressage score, a feat no other horse has ever achieved in the EquiRatings record books.
His streak came to an end at Virginia Horse Trials last month, when Cornelia and Louis M just narrowly missed a sub-40 dressage mark on 40.2, though they did go on to win the CCI*.
During his sub-40 hot streak, Pia and Louis M garnered seven international victories, giving him a 35% win rate. He also delivered six sub-30 dressage scores during this time, with his personal best of 20.6 setting the bar as the lowest international dressage score since EquiRatings began tracking performance in 2010.
It should come as no surprise that the two closest rivals to Louis M’s hot streak were horses piloted by Michael Jung. Both La Biosthetique Sam FBW and Der Dante reached 15 consecutive sub-40 tests on their international record. Sam’s streak came to an ended at Aachen this year on a 41.5, with Der Dante’s streak ending at Strzegom with his new rider, Kimberly Kojima of the United States, on 50.4.
An incredible 20 consecutive sub-40 international tests. We think this will be a record to stand for quite some time.
All hail King Louis — eventing’s reigning dressage dominator.
Many thanks to Pia and Kerstin Hoffman for supplying us with the Louis M photos.
