Calvin Böckmann: The Young Jung

Dual Olympic gold medalist Michael Jung may be the most dominant event rider in the modern era, but who will follow in his footsteps? At EquiRatings Headquarters we pride ourselves on spotting both human and equine talent at an early stage. One German rising star is firmly on our radar after proving he might be a young Jung.

While several riders born in this century have produced top results at the CCI2* level, 15-year-old Calvin Böckmann stands out in a class of his own. Over the past three seasons, Calvin has dominated the European pony eventing circuit, winning three individual medals with his stalwart partner Askaban B, a 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding.

Take a look at this hardware:

  • 2016: Individual silver & team gold, FEI European Championships for Ponies CCIP2*, Aarhus, Denmark
  • 2015: Individual gold, FEI European Championships for Ponies CCIP2*, Malmö, Sweden
  • 2014: Individual bronze, FEI European Championships for Ponies CCIP2*, Millstreet, Ireland

While his collection of medals is impressive, also consider that 15-year-old Calvin has already completed 19 CCI2* competitions in his budding career. He finished in the top five in 14 of those competitions, facing off against the top young riders in Europe.

In taking a page from Mr. Jung’s book, Calvin also competes very successfully in pure show jumping. Last year he clinched individual silver and team gold with the Zangersheide mare Carvella Z at the FEI European Jumping Championships for Children, Juniors and Young Riders in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.

Calvin has demonstrated consistent ability of the highest caliber across two disciplines. Remember his name, as he will almost certainly continue to impress as he steps up to Junior, Young Rider and ultimately Senior level.

His compatriot — and role model, no doubt — Mr. Jung might well be the top event rider of this millennium, but young Mr. Böckmann has thus far proven himself to be the most talented rider born in this millennium.
