While we didn’t see him represent New Zealand in Rio this year, Andrew Nicholson achieved a major milestone in 2016 that sets him apart from all other active four-star riders, including the indomitable Michael Jung.
Finishing 2nd at Burghley with Nereo marked Andrew’s 30th top-10 finish in a CCI4* since 2010. The fact that Andrew achieved that result while staging his comeback from a broken neck makes his 2016 season all the more impressive.
Andrew has clinched six CCI4* wins since 2010, most notably winning Burghley three consecutive times with the late great Avebury in 2012, 2013 and 2014. He also won Pau in 2012 with Nereo, Kentucky in 2012 with Quimbo, and Luhmühlen in 2013 with Mr. Cruise Control.
William Fox-Pitt is next on the list with 28 top-10 finishes since 2010. He garnered seven CCI4* wins during that time: three at Kentucky (2010 with Cool Mountain, 2012 with Parklane Hawk, 2014 with Bay My Hero), two at Pau (2011 with Oslo, 2013 with Seacookie), Burghley with Parklane Hawk in 2011 and Badminton with Chilli Morning in 2015.
No one will be surprised to see Michael Jung next on this list, with 17 CCI4* top-10s since 2010. That includes an incredible eight wins, with three of those coming aboard the one and only La Biosthetique Sam FBW at major championships: the 2010 Lexington World Equestrian Games, 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics.
Michael also won Luhmühlen in 2012 with Leopin FST and Kentucky twice with fischerRocana FST in 2015 and 2016. Rocana’s second Kentucky win coupled with Sam’s 2015 Burghley and 2016 Badminton wins ultimately gave Michael the elusive Rolex Grand Slam title.
Mary King is the second Team GB rider and only female rider on this list, recording 12 CCI4* top-10s since 2010. She most memorably dominated at Kentucky in 2011 much to the delight of her USA fan base, winning with Kings Temptress and finishing second with Fernhill Urco.
Boyd Martin cements his place as a top rider for Team USA, also with 12 top-10 finishes in a CCI4* since 2010. While he won the very first CCI4* of his career in 2003 at Adelaide aboard True Blue Toozac, another win has eluded him since then. Boyd’s top CCI4* finishes since 2010 include 3rd at Kentucky in 2012 with Otis Barbotiere and 3rd at Luhmühlen in 2014 with Shamwari 4.
