Event Rider Masters Leg 1 Preview – Chatsworth Key Facts

EquiRatings is proud to be the Official Statistics Providers of the 2017 Event Rider Masters Series. Leg 1 kicks off tomorrow at Dodson & Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials. Watch live starting at 10.30am (UK) this Saturday at www.eventridermasters.tv

FIRST PHASE FIGURES

Four dressage leaders at Chatsworth have gone on to win, including Pippa Funnell (GBR) and Sandman 7.

Bettina Hoy (GER) is the only rider to occupy two spots on the top 10 best dressage scores in ERM history. She needs to score below 38.0 with Designer 10 to occupy a third slot; they are averaging 38.8 over the last 12 months.

In 2016, 11 of the 20 lowest ERM dressage scores came at the Chatsworth leg, but Chatsworth final scores accounted for only three of the 20 lowest scores across all legs.

SHOW JUMPING STANDARDS

The Chatsworth leg had the highest percentage of clear show jumping rounds of the ERM series in 2016, with 42.5% of the field jumping clear.

No winner of the CIC3* has had a show jumping rail since 2010.

Sarah Ennis (IRL) and BLM Diamond Delux have knocked just one rail in 15 CIC3* show jumping rounds.

THE NEED FOR SPEED

The clock will make all the difference at Chatsworth, where the optimum time is notoriously difficult to make. In more than 1,000 CIC3* runs at Chatsworth, just two riders — Chris Burton (AUS) and Astier Nicolas (FRA) — have made the time.

Only 10 horses have come within 10 seconds of the optimum time since 2010. Eight of those 10 were in 2016, including Soladoun, who lines up again this year with Elizabeth Power (IRL). They had just 2.4 time penalties last year, which is tied for the fifth fastest round over the CIC3* course since 2010.

Only 12.9% of all ERM runs in 2016 were clear and inside the time on cross country. Chatsworth accounted for just 0.4% of those runs.

WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN

The record Chatsworth finishing score to beat is 45.0, achieved by Andrew Nicholson (NZL) on Viscount George during his most successful season ever in 2013. This year he lines up with Swallow Springs, who has three runs inside the time in the past 12 months.

Of the 13 CIC3* venues in the UK, Chatsworth produces the highest average finishing score, with many pairs in the field finishing above 80 penalties.

Laura Collett (GBR) and Mr. Bass are the only pair to have completed two FOD (finishing on your dressage score) runs in the ERM series. Flora Harris (GBR) and Bayano could join them this weekend at Chatsworth but this is not a place where people inside the time. If Flora did she would win!
