Don Geniro Takes EquiRatings Horse of the Year Title

Following a hotly contested Twitter battle for 2016 EquiRatings Horse of the Year, we have a clear winner! Thousands of enthusiastic Chinese eventing fans rallied behind Don Geniro to give him the #ERHOTY title with a commanding 57% of the vote.

Looking to his overall career thus far, #TheDon averages a 41.9 in dressage in his 22 international appearances, and he has never recorded a cross country jumping penalty in any of his international runs.

The biggest win of his career came this year at the Event Rider Masters leg at Bramham. #TheDon jumped a clear show jumping round and made the optimum time on cross country for the first time at three-star level to clinch a historic victory for China and Alex Hua Tian on his dressage score of 40.1.

#TheDon impressed us once again at the Olympics in Rio, finishing in 8th place individually as a 9-year-old in by far the most grueling competition of his career to date. We have already seen great things from #TheDon, and he will definitely be one of the most exciting horses to watch in 2017 and beyond.

Congratulations to Alex and his team! Thank you to all of the Chinese fans who voted and sent us enthusiastic messages of support for #TheDon

The other #ERHOTY finalists also performed admirably in the voting after winning their individual groups to advance to the final.

Mulry’s Error finished in second place, with a massive group of adoring fans voting in honor of his inspirational double clear performance at Badminton amidst Ben Hobday’s heroic comeback following a battle with cancer. #V8SuperCob indeed!

Portersize Just A Jiff captured hearts around the world as he delivered two top-10 finishes at CCI4* events this season, giving him the best four-star finishing rate of any Irish horse in 2016. Like a fine wine #Jiffy just gets better with age, and we haven’t seen the last of this little horse and Camilla Speirs.

fischerRocana FST held her own as the only mare nominated for #ERHOTY, and she certainly gave us memorable performances this year. One of just three horses to have two top-three finishes in a CCI4* in 2016, Rocana’s repeat Kentucky win ultimately made it possible for Michael Jung to go for the Rolex Grand Slam title at Badminton.

Thank you to the thousands of eventing fans who voted for #ERHOTY on Twitter — more than 7,000 votes were cast! Follow us on Twitter at @EquiRatings and don’t forget to subscribe to the Eventing Podcast on iTunes and Soundcloud.
